Student Responsibilities
- Notifying professors of their accommodations
- Renewing their Accommodation Letter to be able to sign up for their exams.
- Signing up for exams in the Student Disability Portal
Students are responsible for informing their instructors of their Accommodations and signing up for their exams in the Student Disability Portal. Students are responsible for having a conversation with their instructors to discuss their accommodations. Students may provide their Accommodation Letter to professors in person or opt for the system to send a digital copy. Either way, students are responsible for having a conversation with their instructors to discuss their accommodations.
If there is a scheduling conflict with another class or exam, students are responsible for contacting the instructor to work out a new day or time. Depending on instructor preference and student schedule, students will either take it earlier, to ensure time-extension accommodations or start later at a time that overlaps with when the rest of the class is taking it for academic integrity. If students have an instructor-approved adjusted exam time, students must ask the instructor to send an email to CDRexams@syr.edu to inform us that the new date/time has been approved. Emergency medical events that require scheduling the exam at an alternate time will be considered on a case-by-case basis and subject to space availability and faculty approval.
CDR cannot guarantee we will be able to process these late requests. In these cases, exams will need to be taken in the regularly assigned classroom. Students who walk-in without signing up or have not requested and been approved for an exception, will be advised to return to their regularly assigned classroom to take the exam.
Check-in & Exam Procedure:
1. Sign-up for your exam at least 2 days (48 hrs) in advance
2. Check-in at Exams (111 Waverly, Flr. 0) at least 10 minutes prior to exam

All non-essential items (coats, backpacks, cell phones, smart watches, etc.) are required to be kept in a locker during exams. Baseball hats must be warn backwards and hoods remain down. Only items approved by accommodation and/or professor, are permitted in the testing room. Students are responsible for bringing materials required for each exam (e.g. calculator, ruler, pencil, protractor, etc.).
4. Prepare to take the Exam.
Students are responsible for bringing materials required for each exam (e.g. calculator, ruler, pencil, protractor, etc.). All university exam policies must be followed.
During the exam:
- Students must work quietly; a distraction-reduced setting is essential for all! There is absolutely NO TALKING in the exam rooms.
- Food is not permitted in the exam rooms. Drinks are permitted but must be in a clear container or be examined by exam staff.

- Students should refrain from wearing scented products (cologne, perfume, lotions, body spray, aftershave, etc.) to respect those who may have sensitivities.
About CDR’s 48-Hour Exam Sign-up Policy
The Disability Student Portal will not allow students to sign up for any time that falls within a 48-hour period. If your instructor(s) change an exam date that you have already signed up for at CDR, call our office and we will change it for you after we confirm this change with the instructor. View the full policy here.
Exceptions will only be considered for approval when all of the following criteria are met:
- The student provides a written communication from their healthcare provider indicating they experienced a medical incident that prevented them from signing up, and
- They are signing up to take the exam for the same day and time their class is taking the exam (or students otherwise have written faculty approval to take the exam at a different time), and
- There is available space, and
- The student signs up for all their exams for the remainder of the semester, and
- CDR already has a copy of the exam.
